Agency Mission:
Denver Urban Gardens (DUG)
is a nonprofit organization, dedicated to building community, one urban garden
at a time. Denver Urban Gardens
has built and currently manages over 60 community gardens, small parks and the
DeLaney Community Farm. We
strongly believe that gardens are not only a source of inexpensive food for
urban people, but also a place of connection to develop community, promote
healthy living, develop skills and empower individuals to strengthen and
beautify their communities.
We are
looking for motivated interns with a sincere interest in community building and
willingness to work hard. DUG,
like the vegetables in each garden is a small organization in the process of
growing and developing. The energy
and motivation of the staff and intern team is essential to DUGÕs success.
Job
Description:
The Outreach and Communications Intern will be
responsible for reaching out to communities surrounding our gardens to solicit
new gardeners, educate and connect community members with DUG resources, help
to develop written materials, help coordinate and evaluate community
initiatives, and support ongoing community development associated with the
garden.
Responsibilities include:
á
Outreach
to targeted communities including tabling at events, neighborhood contacts and
garden events,
á
Assist
with creation of outreach materials including newsletters, flyers, display
materials and other publications,
á
Coordinate
with garden leaders to plan events for underserved communities,
á
Help
with general field work including garden improvements and work days,
á
Assist
with general office work.
Skills Needed:
á
Interest
in community organizing through gardens.
á
Self-motivated.
á
Ability
to do some physically demanding work.
á
Comfortable
in diverse settings and diverse communities.
á
Spanish
fluency desired, not necessary

Timeframe
for Internship:
Summer
internship runs May-August with a 10-12 hour per week commitment. Fall internship requires a three-month
commitment with an 8-12 hour per week commitment.
