Beeler Community Garden was founded by Doris Elmsley, a grandmother and community activist who wanted to combat drugs and violence in the neighborhood and bring the community together.

It is impossible to talk about Beeler Community Garden without speaking of the visionary leadership and dedication of Doris Elmsley.   After her death this past August, the community planted a crab-apple tree in the garden in her honor.  Her consistent and ongoing belief in the community made this garden grow.

This open space in the middle of Aurora is ringed with large cottonwood trees and boasts a “growing pizza” garden.  A butterfly memorial garden is planned for this year.  Each spring, an opening party connects veteran and new gardeners.  In addition, the annual FallFest, which started with just a few kids, attracted more than 1,300 visitors in 2004.  Due to its popularity, this event has now outgrown the garden, and is now held at the Martin Luther King Jr. Library.

This site is a true oasis.  It’s a place for urbanites to connect , create a place of peace and beauty, and share the joys of growing their own food.
