Community ties run deep at California Community Garden.  From informal neighborhood gatherings to sharing produce with friends and neighbors, this garden is a model of generosity and compassion.

 Why We Love Our Garden:

This garden in Five Points has two plots, separated by California St. Gardeners enjoy a community gathering area that includes picnic tables, benches, and a grill.  Many of the gardeners are seniors, but local families have also become involved.  All participants enjoy the mix of ages in the garden and often make plans to work together and share advice about gardening and life.

California gardeners keep their disabled friends in mind when they plant and harvest, so that people who don’t have the time for a garden, or who physically can’t get down in the dirt can still enjoy fresh produce, herbs, and home-grown flowers. That compassion hasn’t killed the spirit of competition, however.  Summer evenings, people come to the garden and show off their plots and converse with each other.  “My tomatoes are going to be bigger that your tomatoes,” can often be overheard.  Who is up for the challenge?
