Butterfly Hope and Cheltenham Elementary School have partnered to transform the school grounds adding four gardens that serve as outdoor classrooms and living laboratories.

 Why We Love Our Garden:
Cheltenham038.jpg
Denver Urban Gardens assisted Butterfly Hope in creating the Cheltenham Community Garden at Cheltenham Elementary School in 1996.  This unique garden area is utilized by classroom teachers as well as Butterfly Hope for exploration, learning projects, and planting and tending vegetables and flowers each year. Some plots for community gardeners are available as well.

Butterfly Hope (a non-profit organization) connects low-income elementary school children to the wonders of the natural world and to the power of their own creativity.  Butterfly Hope provides important school breaks and after school programs that serve over 270 students annually.  Butterfly Hope programs are based on their belief that children, especially inner-city children, need outlets for creative expression and connection to their natural world.  Butterfly Hope's unique programs combine hands-on environmental science, gardening, expressive arts and visual arts learning in order to immerse children in the creative process and caring for the natural world.  Butterfly Hope serves children who have few other opportunities to participate in arts and environmental science learning.  Gardening is a natural vehicle for teaching children about local ecosystems and habitats, plant science, teamwork, cooperation, perseverance, and the joys of eating healthy fruits and vegetables.  Butterfly Hope leverages the power of arts and nature to positively impact young lives.
