Description

Ellis Community Garden is unique in that it is home to two separate community gardens, the original garden on the northwest corner of the property and the other garden on the southwest corner. The new garden was given to the school by a private donor last year and it was decided that it should come under the DUG umbrella. All the additional gardening spaces allows for the development of a strong and diverse community, with gardeners who hail from many parts of the world including Russia, North Africa, Vietnam, Burma, Iran and Libya.

A special program that Ellis School Community Garden is starting this year is Plant a Row for the Hungry. Plant a Row for the Hungry is a program that encourages gardeners to plant an extra row of vegetables and then donate the surplus to a local hunger relief organization. For Ellis School Community Garden’s effort, they are working with Loaves and Fishes, a local food pantry who will now be receiving fresh produce throughout the summer.
