Family Learning, Garden Style

Written by Vanessa Carrillo Villalobos, DUG’s Bilingual Youth Engagement Manager

One of the most beautiful aspects of a community garden is the community itself. In my own garden plot, I might spend a quiet morning tending to my plants alone. In the neighboring bed, a retired couple may be learning how to grow food for the first time. On the other side, a single parent and their kids might be laughing as they water their seedlings. Across our diverse experiences and backgrounds, we are growing side by side—learning together in shared soil.

Denver Urban Gardens’ Family Workshop Series is rooted in this very spirit of community learning. Modeled after the intergenerational connections found in the garden, these workshops are designed for families to learn side-by-side—children, parents, grandparents, and caregivers all engaging together.

DUG’s teaching philosophy is grounded in learning by doing. Each workshop offers a hands-on, inclusive, and welcoming environment where participants of all ages feel empowered to explore, experiment, and connect—not only with the garden, but with each other. By designing for the youngest learners in the room while offering rich engagement for all, we create space for practical, joyful learning that sticks.

Through this series, families will discover new ways to connect to food, community, and climate—DUG’s core pillars—while building memories that extend far beyond the garden gate.

Whether you’re planting seeds for the first time or passing on knowledge to the next generation, there’s a place for everyone to grow. Join us, and experience the power of learning in community.

Grab your loved ones and join DUG in an upcoming workshop this year!
