DONOR-ADVISED FUNDS
A donor-advised funds (DAF) allow donors to make tax-deductible contributions when circumstances warrant and defer allocation decisions until donors are ready to make them. Select a sponsoring institution (typically a bank), select Denver Urban Gardens as your recipient, and make a contribution. Your contribution can be cash, appreciated securities, or complex assets (properties), and you receive an immediate income tax deduction.

beneficiary designation
A beneficiary designation can be donated as an outright gift of a new or existing insurance policy by naming Denver Urban Gardens as the owner and beneficiary of your insurance contract. Each premium payment to the organization is tax-deductible as a charitable gift if you itemize.

STOCKS, BONDS, & PROPERTIES
DUG accepts stocks, bonds, and properties as gifts. Contact your financial institution to initiate a transfer of assets to Denver Urban Gardens – you may need to contact us to retrieve the necessary account information.
You’ll be able to claim a deduction once you file IRS Form 8283 for non-cash donations. Remember to keep your donation receipt for submission and submit well before year-end so your donation is processed in time for a tax deduction. By donating the asset outright (as opposed to selling the appreciated asset and donating cash), you can avoid capital gains tax and receive a higher tax deduction based on the asset’s full value.

IRA Contributions
If you are 70 1/2 years or older, you can make IRA contributions to DUG by using the Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCB) method. Learn more about eligibility and contribution limits on the IRS website.
Instruct your IRA administrator/custodian to send funds directly to Denver Urban Gardens via check or electronic transfer, and ask that the contribution be noted as an IRA Qualified Charitable Distribution. Then, report it on your tax return using Form 1099-R. Withdrawing the money directly and then donating it to DUG does not count as a QCB – the donation must be made directly from your IRA.
By making an IRA contribution, you don’t pay income tax on the amount transferred. Be sure to verify the annual limit for QCBs.
