The Change Committee was formed in 2021 to be an inclusive and meaningful way for people with marginalized* identities to voice in their own words what they want and need from DUG.
This ~20-person committee meets quarterly to brainstorm, organize, and action plan around Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in DUG programs, events, and more.
*People may experience marginalization or discrimination due to identities they hold, including but not limited to race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, disability, class, religion, age, languages spoken, immigration/citizenship status, and more. Discrimination often manifests as social, economic, and political barriers (both subtle and explicit), discouraging participation and inclusion. This group actively and specifically encourages marginalized folks to participate.
Make meaningful change within the DUG community
Topics We’ve Covered:
- Accessibility in the Gardens
- Land Rights & Acknowledgement
- Engaging Youth
- Cultural Diversity & Representation
- Houselessness Awareness
Committee Expectations
Our members commit to quarterly, 2-hour meetings which focus on 1-2 topics determined collectively at the beginning of each year. Meetings prioritize discussion & collaboration where members advise decision-making at Denver Urban Gardens. While non-staff members are welcome to participate in actionable projects post-meetings, it is not a member requirement.
How to Join
The Change Committee welcomes new members from November 1 to December 31 each year. Our short recruitment window facilitates onboarding, offers discussion deep-dives, and supports community building.
We welcome all community members from various DUG programs, including gardeners, school-based Garden Leaders, program participants, youth, and key partner organizations. We aim to balance membership across the DUG community to ensure better representation, equity, and inclusivity in decision-making.
