The Gray Street Community Garden, located in Lakewood, serves new and seasoned gardeners. One of the biggest priorities at the Gray Street Community Garden is community involvement. Plot owners share two hours of community garden and common area work per month, in addition to maintaining their own plot. They currently have three common plots, open all garden participants: one herbal and perennial garden, and two overflow plots featuring squash, melon, and tomato gardens. The community beautification project – landscaping the entrance – will not only make the garden’s entrance more appealing but the fruit trees planted there as part of the project will directly benefit the gardeners. Additionally, they strive to promote sustainability through organic farming, water conservation, on-site composting, and educational classes for gardeners.
To reach out to the community beyond the garden, Gray Street Community Garden is a part of Produce for Pantries which helps community gardens donate any extra produce to local food pantries. Gray Street Community Garden is partnered with ACS Community Lift in this effort. Gray Street Community Garden is also part of a Jefferson County Recovery Court pilot program to help rehabilitate members of the community with addiction issues. One of the current Gray Street gardeners mentors these recovering adults in gardening skills, working in several plots. Participants learn new life skills, learn where their food comes from, and become grounded (literally!) in new ways. Gray Street is proud to participate in this program. Gray Street Community Garden's commitment to their garden and their local community is apparent in all that they do!
