Potential Plot Availability
Regis University Berkeley Community Garden was formed through the partnership of Regis University, the Berkeley Neighborhood Association, and Denver Urban Gardens. The garden includes members from Regis faculty, staff and students as well as neighbors and members of the faith community. Much of the ongoing financial support for projects comes from the generosity of the Regis Student Government Association (RUSGA). The garden is located on Lowell Blvd just north of the Regis University Parking Lot at 52nd and Lowell. On the slope going down from the parking lot are a variety of native plants procured by the Regis Biology Department. The community vegetable garden consists of sixteen 11 foot by 16 foot plots. There are also two large plots that combine the equivalent of 4 individual plots into one large plot. Members in these plots collaborate on what to plant, with each member getting a share of the harvest. On the street side is a picnic table, barbeque, and grape arbor providing a place where gardeners can meet, rest, or share in potlucks. Adjacent to the arbor are two community plots of flowers and edible herbs. The garden is framed by fruit trees, raspberry plants and currant bushes. Extra produce from the garden is donated to the Comfort Café, Growing Home, and Bon Apetit, the student food and catering service on campus. This garden is unique in that it is predominately a deep-mulch, no-till, drip irrigated method sometimes called permaculture. This method employs layers of manure, cardboard, and hay to ‘grow the soil.’ Gardeners plant their seeds and transplants in nests of hay that have compost and rich soil in the middle. Those who don’t employ the permaculture method have opted to use many of the materials to amend and mulch, which cuts down on weeds and conserves water.
