Community Potluck a Success!

Posted by Emery Donovan, Programs and Events Intern

Thanks to all who attended the June 15 Lakewood Library potluck and documentary screening! The gathering of Master Community Gardeners, Master Composters and Connecting Generations volunteers proved to be a success. Everyone was generous with their contribution to the community potluck, which included two(!!) different types of quinoa, fresh garden veggies, homemade rhubarb tart, and even a chocolate birthday cake!

People had time to mingle and meet other DUG volunteers from different programs before the film screening. The documentary, A Garden in Every Neighborhood, highlights the findings of the four-year research project the Colorado School of Public Health in partnership with Denver Urban Gardens recently completed about the effect of gardens on community health. The 20-minute documentary poignantly captures the wide-ranging positive effects of community gardens on neighborhoods, public health and individual wellbeing. Click here to learn more about the research project. Keep an eye out in the coming weeks for a link to watch the documentary on our website!

At the end of the evening, the Master Composters exuberantly huddled over the calendar with Judy to plan their giveback hours for the month of July.

As someone who is new to the DUG community, I was particularly struck by the enthusiasm and good-spirits of everyone I met. I couldn’t help thinking that those in the DUG community seem unique in their enthusiasm, friendliness and excitement about DUG. The sense of shared enjoyment that filled the room left a smile on my face for the rest of the day.

Look out for another gathering in the fall, “Harvest of Ideas,” that will convene the same group of DUG volunteers!
