DUG’s Baseline Infrastructure Initiative (BII) launched in 2021 when our team recognized a need for equity within our community gardens.
With 200+ community gardens across seven counties in metro Denver, it was inevitable that inequity would arise. While some community gardens serve 100+ gardeners, others have as few as 4 gardeners and over half of our gardens are in designated low-income low-access (LILA) neighborhoods.
This means that some growing spaces might have difficulty with paying for water, planting supplies, maintenance, or other needs.
… this is where DUG steps in.
As part of DUG’s food access programs, BII makes it possible for us to equalize the “growing field” for our gardeners by providing resources across four core areas – activation, infrastructure, financial, and supplies.
This May, we delivered 3,872 plants, 146 compost bags, and 94 straw bales to 19 community gardens in 3 metro Denver counties.
