When you care about something, you put it where everyone can see it.

For thousands of Coloradans, that means supporting community gardens, growing food for neighbors, and creating greener, healthier neighborhoods. Soon, it could also mean displaying that support on the back of their vehicle.

We’re excited to share that the Denver Urban Gardens special license plate petition received 429 signatures in its first 72 hours.

That’s more than 400 Coloradans who have already raised their hands to say that community gardens matter.

While we still have a long road ahead, this early momentum shows that people across Colorado believe in the power of gardens to connect neighbors, increase food access, and create more resilient communities.

Why a DUG License Plate?

Colorado offers special group license plates for nonprofits and causes that have broad public support. To apply, organizations must collect signatures from at least 3,000 Colorado registered vehicle owners who commit to purchasing the plate if it becomes available.

A DUG license plate would do more than help gardeners show their pride.

It would:

  • Increase visibility for community gardens across Colorado
  • Spark conversations about food access and local growing
  • Help more people discover DUG’s programs and gardens
  • Create a lasting symbol of support for healthy communities

Every plate on the road would serve as a reminder that gardens strengthen our neighborhoods.

What 429 Signatures Mean

Reaching 429 signatures in just three days tells us something important: people are excited about this idea.

Whether you’re a longtime community gardener, a volunteer, a donor, a Grow a Garden participant, or someone who simply believes everyone deserves access to fresh food, you’ve helped build this early momentum.

We’ve already reached more than 14% of the signatures needed to move the process forward.

Now we’re inviting the entire DUG community to help us get to the next milestone.

It’s a simple symbol, but it tells a powerful story:
