Every garden tells a story.

Some stories begin with a tiny seed planted in spring. Others begin when neighbors who have never met share a shovel, exchange gardening tips, or harvest vegetables together for the first time.

At DUG, we believe every story belongs in the garden.

During Pride Month, we celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community and reaffirm our commitment to cultivating spaces where everyone can grow, connect, and belong.

Community Gardens Belong to Everyone

Gardens are about more than growing food.

They’re places where people build relationships, celebrate cultures, learn from one another, and care for the land together.

Across DUG’s network of more than 200 community gardens and food forests, gardeners come from many different backgrounds, identities, ages, cultures, and life experiences. That diversity is one of our greatest strengths.

When people feel welcomed exactly as they are, gardens become more vibrant—not only because of what’s growing in the soil, but because of the community growing around it.

Growing Food, Growing Community

A community garden is one of the few places where people from different walks of life regularly come together around a shared purpose.

A gardener may be planting tomatoes beside someone growing traditional herbs from their childhood.

A longtime Denver resident may swap recipes with someone who recently arrived in the city.

Neighbors who may never have crossed paths can find themselves watering plants together on a summer evening.

Those everyday moments of connection remind us that community isn’t built through grand gestures—it’s built through shared experiences, mutual respect, and a willingness to grow together.

Why Belonging Matters

Creating welcoming spaces doesn’t happen by accident.

It happens through intentional acts of kindness, curiosity, and inclusion.

Whether someone is gardening for the first time or has been tending plants for decades, everyone deserves to feel safe asking questions, sharing knowledge, and participating fully in their community.

For LGBTQIA+ community members, having spaces where they are welcomed and respected can make a meaningful difference.

Community gardens have the potential to become places where people not only grow food, but also find friendship, support, and a sense of belonging.

Diversity Makes Gardens Stronger

Nature offers a simple reminder: diversity creates resilience.

Healthy gardens depend on a rich variety of plants, pollinators, microorganisms, and ecosystems working together. Each contributes something unique.

Communities thrive the same way.

Different perspectives, cultures, identities, and lived experiences strengthen neighborhoods, inspire creativity, and help us solve challenges together.

When everyone has a place in the garden, everyone benefits.

Growing with Pride

Throughout the year, DUG works to reduce barriers that make it harder for people to participate in community gardening.

From improving accessibility and expanding multilingual resources to supporting community-led gardens and creating educational opportunities, we’re committed to cultivating spaces where more people can experience the many benefits of gardening.

Pride Month is one opportunity to celebrate that commitment, but creating welcoming gardens is work that continues every season.

It’s reflected in the way we greet a new gardener, share a harvest, invite a neighbor to volunteer, or simply make room for someone new at the table.

How You Can Help Cultivate Belonging

Every gardener helps shape the culture of their community garden.

You can help create welcoming spaces by:

  • Greeting new gardeners and introducing yourself
  • Sharing gardening knowledge with beginners
  • Respecting the diverse identities, cultures, and experiences of fellow gardeners
  • Celebrating the many traditions and foods represented in your community
  • Inviting neighbors to volunteer, garden, or attend community events
  • Helping create an environment where everyone feels valued and included

Small acts of welcome can grow into lasting relationships.

Pride Grows Here

At DUG, we believe gardens are strongest when everyone has the opportunity to participate.

This Pride Month, we’re celebrating the LGBTQIA+ gardeners, volunteers, garden leaders, partners, and neighbors who help cultivate thriving communities across Metro Denver.

Thank you for helping make our gardens places where food grows, friendships flourish, and everyone has the opportunity to put down roots.

Together, we’re cultivating more than gardens—we’re cultivating belonging.
