Through DUG’s Grow a Garden program, we support over 14,000 individuals and families in metro Denver to access low-cost (or free) beginner-friendly garden kits with seeds and seedlings that grow well in our Colorado climate.

Of those 14,000, hundreds are public housing residents through Denver Housing Authority (DHA) and Aurora Housing Authority (AHA), whom DUG proudly supports at no cost to the individuals. Offering free themed growing kits means increased food security and access to fresh and healthy foods for more Coloradans who want to grow.

The goals of the DHA Community Garden Program are to promote healthy food access, increase resident social interaction, and improve mental health while connecting with nature. DHA has 12 community gardens, consisting of 218 plots, where produce is grown by and directly benefits DHA families. One gardener at North Lincoln Homes noted, “The garden helps me save money and eat fresh food.  I love meeting the other gardeners and socializing together.  Seeing my plants grow healthy food makes me very happy.”

For the AHA, they’ve seen an immense impact on their residents who participate in the program. Maya Green from the AHA stated, “The DUG Grow a Garden program has planted more than just seeds—it’s cultivated community, wellness, and a sense of pride among our residents. By removing the financial barrier to accessing fresh plants and seeds, this partnership has empowered AHA families and seniors to grow their own food, connect with their neighbors, and take ownership of their health and environment.”

DUG’s Grow a Garden program strives for accessibility and equity to achieve food sovereignty for all Denverites. For Denver’s most vulnerable (and often neglected) populations, it’s essential! This program lowers the barrier to entry for gardening so that the biggest obstacle is deciding which kit one wants to grow.
